Legendary Creature: Elephliger

This artist’s illustration depicts a legendary creature, a cross between an elephant and the rare liger.  This animal was reported to have been witnessed by Western explorers and native peoples in Southeast Asia and the lower areas of China and India in the early 1800s.  Supposed artifacts from this creature, such as its tusks, fangs, or claws, that were collected for cabinets of curiosities as naturalia or mirabilia items were actually poached parts from existing living animals (elephants or big cats).  This legendary creature was prized as a symbol of civilized power and natural wonder.

So, I had to do some extra credit for one of my classes.  LLEA 270: Freaks and Monsters.  Interesting and great class!  We study the history and ethics of people who have been "enfreaked" in some way (little people, hypertrichotic individuals, conjoined twins, etc.) as well as things in fairy tales and mythology.  My professor is currently collecting items for her own "Cabinet of Curiosity" so this is my contribution.  A sketch of a mythical creature my siblings and I created from the combination of our favorite animals (lion, elephant, and tiger) from years ago XD
